Literary Chaplaincy

What is literary chaplaincy?

Literary chaplaincy is a form of non-denominational support that offers a kind ear through literature. It is not therapy, but rather a space for individuals to find solace and connection through the written word. Regardless of background or beliefs, everyone is welcome to seek comfort and guidance within this unique form of chaplaincy.

The steps I take are simple but powerful:

  • Listen.

  • Do a sacred practice.

  • Reflect with care.

WHO IS IT FOR?

— People of any religion or faith

— Anyone looking for some support - either short or longer-term

— A heartfelt concern

— Thorny relationship issues where there is not abuse or trauma

— Differing expectations or boundaries in new or existing relationships

— Preparing for upcoming transitions or struggling with a new transition

— When you’re having the same feeling over and over again

— Prolonged period of pain or sadness, and you’re worried close friends/family have grown tired of listening

TYPES OF SESSIONS

  • If you are having a hard time making a decision or have a clear question, this is a great option for you. We will meet once for 75 minutes. I’ll send you a reflection form and read it before we meet. You will bring two “sparklets”. These are quotes from novels, essays or other writings or song lyrics or poems (something short that we can read together). We will use those texts as a jumping off point to reflection on your question.

Examples of questions that are good for these meetings are:

    • Should I move to Pittsburgh?

    • Should I go to my ex’s wedding?

    • Should I take a break from my relationship with my dad?

    • What kind of wedding do I want?

These are questions that we will try to have a firm answer to by the end of the session.

If you are looking for ongoing support— through a bigger question or discernment, I recommend choosing the "Multiple Sessions" option.

  • If you are wondering what values you want to start to live your life in relationship with, or what some deep spiritual reflection, this is the option for you.

I believe that there are six core values:

    1. Connection

    2. Duty

    3. Safety

    4. Giving

    5. Achievement

    6. Growth

We all value all of these things. But we each are living in relationship with a special one or two of these values at any given moment. This can be a lifelong commitment, or a season that we are going through. If you want to discern which value(s) matter most to you and how you can live up to them, this is the option for you.

Likewise, if you are looking to more deeply connect with your spirituality, we can meet as long as you want.

I recommend meeting weekly for a period of time of your choice, or monthly for a year.
